Synopsis

The itinerant SINCA seminar is recognized for its interest in generating spaces where genuine academic discussion and constructive reflection on basic science, translational science, and applied science derived from the studies of behavior, both human and non-human, are privileged. Consequently, SINCA serves to allow students of different levels to participate in an international event at a very low cost. In addition, on the occasion of the celebration of the seminar, a book is usually produced on each occasion that materializes the reflection and advances in areas of knowledge that illustrate the thematic axes addressed at the event. The authors of the book are usually established researchers and young researchers with a promising future, which makes the product an exceptional exercise.

Thus, we come to book number eight. The first work published on the occasion of the celebration of SINCA was entitled Estudios sobre ambiente y aplicaciones, volume 1; under the same title, three other volumes were published at successive events. For SINCA VI, held in Tlaxcala, the book was titled Approaches to the Study of Behavior and its Applications, and three volumes were published under this title. On this occasion, the book has a new name: Current Approximations on Behavior and its Applications. With different names, the best known as the “SINCA book” has become a tradition.

The SINCA book is published on this occasion by the Autonomous University of Aguascalientes. This work derives from the celebration of the ninth edition of the seminar and constitutes one more case where researchers from the country and researchers from other latitudes systematize their ideas and observations on different behavioral principles in light of the experimental analysis of behavior and how these principles are applied to different areas. The book not only contributes to the progress of the discipline, but also to the transfer of knowledge.

What topics will you find in this book? In Chapter 1, Sarah Cowie, Michael Davison, and Douglas Elliffe address the discussion on the functions of the reinforcer, contrasting two perspectives, the prospective approach to reinforcer control and the retrospective reinforcement perspective. In Chapter 2, Álvaro Torres and Ángel Tovar show us the historical development of central concepts in behavior analysis, such as “learning” and “reinforcement,” in order to explore how these concepts can be applied to emerging problems such as the use of artificial intelligence. Chapter 3, written by Emmanuel Alcalá, Tania Campos, and Jonathan Buriticá, characterizes inhalant use, an addictive behavior that negatively impacts people's health and about which few studies are available. In Chapter 4, Livia Sánchez reviews different response recovery phenomena traditionally used to study relapse. Chapter 5 is the work of Héctor Hinojiante and Héctor Martínez. The document focuses on the study of complex human learning and describes the emergence of both simple and conditional discriminations of different orders. Chapter 6 was written by Luis Antonio Pérez-González and provides continuity to the previous chapter, as it focuses on understanding the basic processes of learning verbal behavior from simple procedures. In chapter 7, Mariel Almaguer and Rodolfo Bernal address the problem of anthropomorphism, a persistent tendency to describe various aspects of non-human behavior in human terms. Chapter 8 was written by Eduardo Reynoso Cruz and Laura Teresa Hernández, who address the importance of service animals, to support care in different clinics, and biodetection animals, which can identify medical conditions facilitating their treatment. Continuing on, chapter 9, presented by Miriam Yerith Jiménez and Ernesto Figueroa, focuses on the inclusion of medical alert and intervention dogs in different environments. Chapter 10 was developed by Óscar Zamora and Yina Hernández. In this case, a review is carried out on metacognition –a form of assessment that allows predicting how to perform cognitive tasks, solve problems or remember information–, a discussion is presented on whether metacognition is an exclusively human process and a methodological proposal is made for its study, both for humans and non-humans. In chapter 11, Norma Ortega and Carlos Santoyo present an experimental work on procrastination in university students, a problem that affects academic performance and psychological well-being. Chapter 12 deals with the use of ICT in higher education. The work of Karla Acuña, Jamné Dávila, Andrea Acosta, Desiderio Ramírez and Miriam Jiménez makes evident what we have experienced in universities as a consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic in terms of education. Chapter 13, by Felipe Cabrera and Idania Zepeda, explains how the development of skills and abilities, fundamental objectives in special education, as well as the design of experimental conditions for the study of animal behavior, can benefit from findings that suggest that environmental characteristics encourage particular responses. Chapter 14 discusses the possibility of contributing from behavioral sciences to inclusive education. The authors, Josué Camacho and Francisco Aguilar, address the problem of transferring basic knowledge collected in the laboratory to school settings following the Taxonomic Model of Skill Development and thereby facilitating inclusion. Hugo Reyes, Rodrigo Carranza, Francisco Pedroza, and Antonio Calvillo address, in chapter 15, the problem of understanding health care as an inter-temporal choice, evidencing the relationship of delay discounting with different problems. Chapter 16 was written by Luis Alfaro, who makes us reflect on how the control and mitigation of infections in the COVID-19 pandemic depends on the execution of certain behaviors. The book closes with a document by the honorary president of the congress, Ricardo Pellón, who tells us about his career and contributions to the experimental analysis of behavior.
